Q: I find that when I'm jogging, I keep thinking about the jog. I'd love to be able to let my mind wander so I'm not constantly dwelling on the exercise I'm doing. Do you have any tips to help me get 'in the zone?'
A: Jogging is a great form of cardiovascular exercise. As a runner myself, some days are better than others, but I do occasionally find it difficult to let myself become distracted while exercising.
Having said that, there are a few things you can do to keep your mind off of the cardio task at hand. I find that music is a great motivator, especially when I'm running. I crank up the volume on my headphones, sing along (when I can!) and let my mind wander.
You might also want to recruit a friend to run with you. Having company is another great way to keep you from getting bored. To help you both stay committed to working out together, find a local 5km route in your community and perhaps use it as preparation for a 5km race.
I would also suggest adding more cross training to your exercise regime. Mix things up a bit to keep your mind and body fresh. For example, you could go to a gym and work out on the elliptical trainer for 15 minutes, then switch to the stationary bike for another 15 minutes and finish off on the treadmill for the last 15 minutes. Cross training also helps prevent your body from adapting to the same exercise routine.
