Set yourself goals
It’s important you think up short-term and long-term goals to keep you focused. Have them as your screensaver, leave yourself post-its on the fridge, or store them in your wallet. Dietician Susie Burrell says it’s essential you view and refine them regularly. “If a goal doesn’t work, don’t put yourself down,” Susie says. “Ask yourself why it didn’t work and how you can change your behaviour. Were you expecting too much of yourself? If you fall off the wagon, get back on track at the next meal.”
Get measuring
Make your journey as motivating as possible by taking your measurements before you start – the more ways the better! Use a tape measure to record your arms, neck, waist, hips, butt and calves, then take a full-length ‘before photo’. Try on the same outfit you wore that day every month to watch your body change before your eyes – you’ll be blown away by the results.
Round up the troops
While it’s not compulsory that everyone knows you’re doing Weight Watchers, telling close friends and family members about your new lifestyle can save you a lot of anxiety over get-togethers. Who knows, your loved ones may even want to do it with you!
Be the queen of the kitchen
“Always make time for food preparation,” Susie insists. Grocery shopping can be tedious, but it can seriously impact on success. Set aside 15 minutes before you shop to roughly plan out your meals for the week. Drag out dusty cookbooks, surf the Weight Watchers website or create your own recipes, à la Nigella Lawson. The more organised you are, the easier making healthy food choices will be.
Give your wardrobe a workout
Many slimmers like to keep something inspirational in their closet as a reminder of their goal weight. Others prefer to splash out on a few items when they notice a significant shift in their dress size. Both techniques are great, as they’ll keep you feeling and looking your best along the way. If, like most of us, you’re watching your budget as often as your waistline, indulge in vintage op-shopping or take your favourite outfits in for alterations.
Reward yourself
Every time you hit one of your small goals, it’s important that you give yourself a big pat on the back. Brag about it on your blog, call up your family, shout it from the rooftops – whatever works for you. For larger, long-time goals – like losing 5kg, 15kg, hitting Goal, completing maintenance – treat yourself to a non-food-related indulgence like a pedicure or massage.
