"Weight Watchers has left me well equipped to maintain my healthy weight in the long term."
Having defeated breast cancer, Damaris squared up to take on her next opponent – her weight. With a fighting spirit, she was not going to be beaten!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011
It wasn’t very long after the birth of my daughter. I had already put on a fair bit of weight during the pregnancy and falling ill really didn’t help things. The diagnosis left me feeling unhappy and out of control.

I gained weight steadily during treatment
I was depressed throughout the whole ordeal and I dealt with it by eating. I didn’t fit into any of my clothes anymore and it became really obvious that my eating had gotten away from me.

When I was given the all clear, it was like a second chance
I knew it was now or never to take back control of my life and my body. I had beaten breast cancer, and that’s easily one of the most terrifying things that can happen to a woman. I knew I could defeat my weight demons too!

Weight Watchers has fitted into my life perfectly!
I had great success with Weight Watchers five years ago so I knew it was going to work for me. I love Weight Watchers because you don’t have to give up anything. Everyone says this but it’s true! You learn how to value food differently and you find different outlets for the reasons you eat. Instead of emotional eating I now exercise instead and I feel so much better for it! You can really tailor Weight Watchers to suit your needs.

My husband is very supportive of our new lifestyle
He is a rugby player, so he eats twice as much as me easily, and there was a point when I was eating the same amount as him. We’ve given our approach to eating a complete overhaul and now I probably eat about half of what he does! He gives me a nudge out of bed when I don’t feel like getting up to go running or swimming. I’m lucky to have him around to not take no for an answer!

Once you learn the secret to healthy eating, it’s easy to maintain
I was scared that once I’d reached my goal weight I might slip back into old habits, but Weight Watchers has left me well equipped to maintain my healthy weight in the long term. I am wiser in my food choices and never feel like I’m missing out on anything.

I use the Weight Watchers recipes to plan my family’s meals for the week
I sit down at the start of the week and plan out exactly what we’ll be eating for dinner each night. In the past we’d get takeaway at least one night per week, but now we don’t even do that with the meal plans in place. You’re much less likely to turn to junk food as a quick and easy alternative. It’s actually quicker and easier to plan in advance. Besides this, I’m a mother of two so time really is at a premium, and planning definitely takes out the stress of what to have for tea each night!

I’m living proof that if you fall down six times, you need to get up seven!
Life throws some pretty crazy challenges your way, but I’ve learnt that you can’t hide from them or you won’t get anywhere. Starting out on a weight loss journey is a daunting task for sure, but you just need to remember that so many people have succeeded in reaching their goals, so why can’t you? You can have everything you want, you just need to work for it! I battled the bulge and breast cancer and won, I feel like there’s nothing that I can’t take on now. Bring it on, life!
