“Each of the Healthy Life Awards finalists has an amazing story to tell, so to be singled out among such an inspiring group of people is incredible.”

Tasmanian paramedic Bron Robertson has overcome all odds to be crowned the 2009 Weight Watchers Healthy Life Awards Slimmer of the Year, after a frightening experience left her questioning her health and her capacity to perform her lifesaving job.

Vicious cycle
"I was always the chubby one at school and looked forward to losing my 'puppy fat' as my mother called it – almost expecting it would magically disappear! However, this never happened and when I hit puberty my weight dramatically increased, making this difficult time even worse. As a result, I entered adulthood with low self-esteem, and in a vicious cycle that is all too common, I self-medicated through overeating and comfort eating."

Light-bulb moment
"My 'light-bulb' moment came while working as a paramedic on a particularly hot day in January 2009. A case came in which required me to get to an isolated patient on foot in a national park. At the end of the case I was physically exhausted and feeling faint, even though it was not actually a big a hike. It was at that moment that I realised that my weight was jeopardising my ability to do my job and the following week I went to my first Weight Watchers meeting."

Living proof
"Over the years I had many people from GPs, nurses, friends and family tell me about Weight Watchers but it wasn't until I saw the results first hand that I thought it was something I could do."

"I caught up with a friend of mine who I hadn't seen in six months – I hardly recognised her, and the change in her demeanour and outlook on life was extraordinary. She is Mum to two very active children and works full time. In a word she was an absolute inspiration to me."

The ultimate reward
Bron accepted the award saying that becoming the Slimmer of the Year is a pleasure and a privilege, and she was looking forward to being an ambassador to inspire others to embrace change and a healthier lifestyle.

“I used to think it would be impossible to feel good about myself again. Looking back at what I went through to be here, I feel tremendously proud of my achievements. Each of the Healthy Life Awards finalists has an amazing story to tell, so to be singled out among such an inspiring group of people is incredible,” Bron said.

Prize package
As the 2009 Slimmer of the Year, Bron receives a prize package valued at over $15,000, including:
